How else have we helped A SMART Rescue?

They’re AC system was failing in their cat house, where they kennel cats for adoption. Years of overwork and dander accummulation slowly damaged the compressor. We thought, “This is what we do best, make folks AND animals comfortable!”
We volunteered to install a new system with excellent filtration capacity completely free of charge. Now the kitties can enjoy comfort as they wait for adoption.

How Does this Benefit The Woodlands & You?

If A SMART Rescue can increase their adoption, sanctuary, and Trap-Neuter-Return programs, we can reduce the population of abandoned and stray animals in The Woodlands. Fewer stray animals also means fewer litters of stray kittens and puppies, which, if they survived, would surely increase the population of feral animals in The Woodlands.

There’s a direct benefit to you. A SMART Rescue is a is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization. Any contribution you give is tax deductible. We call that a win-win situation for The Woodlands and you!

SMART is a volunteer, foster based, no-kill animal rescue organization. They spend minimal amounts on administrative costs and the only paid staff they employee deal directly with the care of the animals. They primarily foster and adopt cats and dogs but have been called upon to help with a variety of other animals over the years. They are a Petsmart partner and hold weekly adoptions at 3 locations and our animals are listed on www.petfinder.com. Once an animal is accepted into our program it is fostered until a permanent home is found. Many animals are adopted within one to two months, but they do have some with volunteers for several years before the right home can be found. Once they “rescue” an animal, it is rescued for life. If an adopter gets in the position of needing help caring for the animal adopted from us, They are there to help whether it’s helping with food and/or medical due to financial difficulties or whether They need to take the animal back and re-adopt due to unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately within the past year or so, they have had numerous animals returned primarily due to the economic downturn.

Since 2002 they have successfully placed over 3,800 animals into permanent, loving homes. All of the animals are fully vetted, micro-chipped and altered prior to adoption. Their primary focus over the past several years has been to network with other rescue groups and shelters to join forces in the “No Kill” movement. Many in our organization have walked shelters and seen the unnecessary sadness and death and they believe that through networking and educating the public, they can successfully spread the message that adoption is the only humane option.

They are on a network list with many area shelters and are contacted about the animals whose “time is up” to see if they can make room for them in our program. They help as space allows and in addition, they also network with other groups for their assistance. Several area shelters don’t allow the public to adopt from them so the only chance their animals have is from rescue groups like us pulling them. As space and funds allow they also help the public directly; from educating to helping with low cost altering to helping find homes for strays they have rescued.

Another program they are actively involved in is Trap-Neuter-Return. They work with other groups to capture, alter, vaccinate and return these cats to their outside homes. These cats are then allowed to live out their natural lives without reproducing and adding to the overpopulation problem. They believe that there are benefits to allowing feral cat colonies to continue existing in their natural habitat.
They have also established a small, private sanctuary for some of the cats and dogs that have been rescued from the streets. These animals do not meet our adoption criteria due to continuing medical needs or low adoptability scores but they are committed to these animals and believe that they should be allowed to live out their natural lives in peace receiving the love and care all animals deserve. Currently there are approximately 70 animals living in sanctuary.

As you can see, A SMART Rescue could benefit from your and our donations to sustain and expand their vital programs in The Woodlands.

Coco’s Causes: Making A difference in The Woodlands

As pet owners in The Woodlands, we are often troubled by the plight of abandoned dogs and cats. Many of these animals unfortunately are euthanized because they cannot find homes. This is not right and we thought we could do something to help. So we started Coco’s Causes, after one of our dear chocolate labrador retrievers, to raise money each year for a non-profit in The Woodlands that addresses this problem. This year we have selected to raise money for A SMART Rescue, a volunteer, foster based, no-kill animal rescue organization right here in The Woodlands.
